Banyan Tree Escape Buahan is an award-winning eco-luxury resort set within the lush landscape of Gianyar, Bali. Designed around the resort’s signature “Naked Experience” concept, the villas eliminate walls and doors to foster a deep connection between guests and nature, blurring the boundaries between architecture and the surrounding environment.
Sustainability is embedded in the resort’s design from the outset. Each structure is thoughtfully integrated into the natural terrain, prioritising the preservation of existing flora and fauna while minimising environmental disturbance. This approach reflects Banyan Tree’s broader commitment to responsible tourism and low-impact development.
A defining feature of the project is the use of reclaimed Ulin (ironwood), a highly durable hardwood traditionally used for maritime infrastructure in Kalimantan. Naturally resistant to insects and decay, the repurposed Ulin wood was given a second life within the resort’s construction, significantly reducing material waste. It embodied energy while reinforcing the project’s narrative of sustainability.
Sustainahaus served as the EDGE Expert, collaborating with a local EDGE Auditor during the post-construction phase. Through this collaboration, Banyan Tree Escape Buahan successfully achieved EDGE certification in early 2023, reinforcing its position as a benchmark for sustainable luxury hospitality in Indonesia.
